A whistleblower is an informant, most often an employee, who reports employer misconduct. In order to encourage disclosure, many federal and state statutes prohibit employers from retaliating against an employee who files reports. In
the environmental law context, whistleblowers play a significant role in reporting environmental violations by their
employers.
